SAT It is seventy years since the formation of the Auxiliary SAT Unit. SAT Winston Churchill told them 'You are my secret army, so you SAT dare not take a bow.' Their battleground was to be the SAT field, the hedge, the ditch, the wood. Perhaps fortunately, SAT they never got to put their training into action, as life SAT expectancy for the auxiliers once the Germans had invaded SAT was said to be between seven and ten days. SAT SAT A secret bunker in the woods outside Newport, South Wales SAT SAT 06:30 Farming Today b00vr59w (Listen) SAT Farming Today This Week SAT SAT Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Anne Marie SAT Bullock. SAT SAT First appearing on our screens in November 1970, The SAT Goodies' Bill Oddie, Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor - SAT were prime-time mainstays for the next decade. They were the SAT fifth biggest-grossing pop act of 1975, bagged two Silver SAT Roses of Montreux, and were so funny they caused a SAT 50-year-old bricklayer to laugh himself to death. SAT SAT Their shows, in which the trio played an agency of three SAT bicycling blokes for hire to do "anything, anywhere, SAT anytime", were freewheeling streams-of-nonsense in which TV SAT conventions were upended and every silent-movie gag in SAT history lovingly re-created. SAT SAT On the 40th anniversary of the Goodies' television debut, SAT comedian Ross Noble hops on his trandem and revisits a world SAT of giant cats, Lancastrian martial artists, rampaging SAT Dougals and funky gibbons. SAT SAT The independent reviewer of terror legislation, Lord SAT Carlile, is preparing to stand down from the job he's held SAT for nine years. Here, he gives a warning against 'siren SAT voices' arguing for control orders to be scrapped. SAT SAT Finally, new laws to allow a referendum on changing the SAT voting system, and to ensure an equal number of votes in SAT each constituency, passed the Commons this week. But how SAT will they fare in the House of Lords? The Lib Dem, Lord SAT Tyler and the Conservative, Lord Norton make their predictions. SAT SAT 11:30 Crossing Continents b00tjrgx (Listen) SAT The Church in China SAT SAT Christopher Landau explores the explosive growth of SAT christianity in China, with millions flocking to the SAT official Protestant and Catholic churches. The country has SAT the world's largest bible printing press while some SAT factories are run on Christian principles. Why has the SAT Communist state, which is formally atheist, endorsed this SAT transition? There is official interest in the idea of a SAT "Protestant work ethic" aiding the country's economy while SAT some branches of government hope that the church's social SAT services will help care for an ageing population. Play telling the story of the SAT tense negotiation that followed the 2010 general election SAT leading to the country's first post war coalition. SAT SAT Based on interviews with those who were at the meetings, SAT political journalists and on published material - and using SAT actors to play all the key characters - this is a compelling SAT account of those five momentous days in May. SAT SAT Under extreme pressure and suffering from lack of sleep, the SAT politicians argued and negotiated. There was nothing SAT inevitable about a Conservative Liberal Democrat coalition. SAT Revealing key moments of the negotiations, the drama unpicks SAT what went on behind closed doors and shows how an alliance SAT between the Conservative and Liberal Democrat gradually SAT formed, and how it withstood the resignation of Gordon Brown. SAT SAT Based on pain-staking research, this is a must-listen SAT 60-minute play - a compelling and entertaining account by SAT award-winning writer Matthew Solon of the most extraordinary SAT British election outcome in 70 years. SAT SAT 15:30 Beat It: The World of The Modern Drummer b00vkwvc (Listen) SAT When John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in SAT the world he quipped " He wasn't even the best drummer in SAT the Beatles". Lennon's natural put-down is typical of the SAT way drummers are belittled within music circles. SAT SAT Presenter Phill Jupitus challenges this notion with the help SAT of a cross-section of musicians to discover how they have SAT gained this reputation? SAT SAT Producer: John Sugar SAT A Sugar Production for BBC Radio 4. SAT SAT 16:00 Woman's Hour b00vr5w1 (Listen) SAT Presented by Jane Garvey. SAT SAT Evan is joined in the studio by Katherine Garrett-Cox, Chief SAT Executive of Alliance Trust, an investment trust; Brent SAT Hoberman, serial internet entrepreneur and founder of SAT web-based furniture company made.com; Phil Bentley, Managing SAT Director of utility company British Gas. SAT SAT 20:00 Archive on 4 b00vr62g (Listen) SAT Our Obsession With Weather SAT SAT The author Iain Sinclair presents a timely illustrated essay SAT on that uniquely British obsession - the weather. Why has SAT the seemingly-mundane weather forecast been an obsession for SAT listeners and viewers since the early days of broadcasting? SAT What does it tell us about our national character and the SAT role of broadcasting in our lives? SAT SAT The first weather forecasts lasted five minutes and SAT resembled a military briefing. Today they last a couple of SAT minutes but viewers barely pay any attention, they recall SAT little of what the forecasters said. Weather forecasters SAT call for more time but does anyone place too much faith in SAT the BBC's weather forecast anymore? SAT SAT We'll hear from the forecasters - Michael Fish, Bill Giles SAT and Sian Lloyd - what does it mean to be at the forefront of SAT the British public's interaction with their favourite SAT subject? SAT SAT Along the way we'll hear evocative archive of extreme SAT weather events like: floods of '53, hard winter of 63, red SAT rain in '68, summer of '76 and the gales of '87. SAT SAT Messing with the weather is a tricky business. The latest SAT style of TV graphics, the infamous tilting map called the SAT fly over, caused disapproval up and down the country. Why SAT was our Pleasant Land coloured brown not green? Proud Scots SAT protested that their country appeared diminished- surely SAT another example of bias from the South East of England? SAT SAT Iain will ask what role the weather plays in our culture - SAT any writer purposefully tuned to the language of the moment SAT will be obliged to employ the weather as a moral sub-text, a SAT framing device, a ceiling of depression - weather as SAT prediction. Weather as a liquid mirror in which the writer, SAT reads our future. A curious link develops between the great SAT winds of 16 October 1987 and the collapsing financial SAT markets on "Black Monday." SAT SAT Producer: Barney Rowntree SAT A Somethin Else production for BBC Radio 4. SAT SAT 21:00 Classic Serial b00vkp4q (Listen) SAT The Ramayana, Part One SAT SAT By Amber Lone. A distinctive modern version of an ancient SAT Indian epic and one of the world's most popular love SAT stories. Teenage Sita sees the most beautiful stranger in SAT the street. She'll marry him or die. He is Prince Rama, heir SAT to the throne but his stepmother wants Rama sent into exile. SAT SAT Sita...Manjinder Virk SAT Rama...Lloyd Thomas SAT Lakshman...Adeel Aktar SAT Ravan...Paul Bhattacharjee SAT Surparnaka...Sasha Behar SAT Dasarath...Jude Akuwudike SAT Sister...Deeivya Meir SAT Bharat...Saikat Ahamed SAT SAT Music composed by Niraj Chag SAT Directed by Claire Grove SAT SAT 22:00 Africa at 50: Wind of Change b00vhfwt (Listen) SAT Episode 3 SAT SAT Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana gained independence in 1957 and Julius SAT Nyerere's Tanganyika followed in 1961. Nkrumah wanted SAT immediate unity of the continent; Nyerere wanted political SAT independence first, as half of Africa was still under SAT colonial rule. He called for a candle to be lit on SAT Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, as a beacon for the SAT liberation of the rest of Africa. SAT SAT Some of the 53 African countries gained independence through SAT peaceful negotiations with the colonial power, and some had SAT to fight for independence. Tanzania played a key part as a SAT frontline state hosting and supporting many of the southern SAT African liberation movements. SAT SAT In Part 3 of Africa at 50: The Wind of Change, retired SAT Brigadier General Hashim Mbita reflects on his country's SAT role in the liberation struggle. As a civil servant, army SAT officer and journalist, he was central to many of the key SAT events of the time. As Chief Executive of the OAU SAT Coordinating Committee for the Liberation of Africa, which SAT was based in Dar es Salaam, he played a pivotal part in the SAT funding and training of the armed struggles for independence SAT where it was not granted through negotiation. SAT SAT Producer: Ruth Evans SAT A Ruth Evans Production for BBC Radio 4. SAT SAT 22:15 Moral Maze b00vkxxw (Listen) SAT The Al-Qaeda bombs on cargo planes heading for America may SAT have failed to detonate, but for psychological impact their SAT timing couldn't have been better. The prospect of airline SAT chiefs getting their much sought after reform of the SAT stringent checks on passengers must now look remote. Of SAT course the terrorists want us to be constantly reminded of SAT their threat; to disrupt our lives; to make us live in fear, SAT even though the chances of any of us being a victim of the SAT terrorism are miniscule. But are we playing in to their SAT hands with the blanket news coverage and seemingly constant SAT stream of security experts ready to warn us of the sinister SAT threats to our safety? Perhaps it's not only our SAT psychological well being that's being eroded - there's our SAT civil liberties as well. The police are allowed to hold SAT suspects for 28 days without trial; the government is SAT reviewing the use of detention orders, but it's going to SAT take a brave politician in the current climate to stand up SAT and say we need less security. Perhaps that's a case of SAT moral cowardice, but then the ongoing inquest in to the 7/7 SAT bombing is a sobering reminder of the horrors of terrorism. SAT The terrorists only have to be lucky once, our security SAT services have to be lucky every day. Shouldn't they have all SAT the tools they need to combat those who want to do us harm SAT and that may mean temporarily sacrificing some of our SAT freedoms. So, terrorism, the politics of fear and the price SAT we're willing to pay to defend our civil liberties. SAT SAT Combative, provocative and engaging debate chaired by SAT Michael Buerk with Michael Portillo, Kenan Malik, Claire Fox SAT and Melanie Philips. SAT SAT 23:00 Brain of Britain b00vkwcq (Listen) SAT (2/17) The contestants in the second heat of the nationwide SAT general knowledge contest are from Derbyshire, West SAT Yorkshire and the West Midlands. Russell Davies is in the chair. SAT Producer Paul Bajoria. SAT SAT 23:30 The Electric Polyolbion b00vkp4v (Listen) SAT Part poetry and part national topological survey with a rich SAT seam of encounters along the way, The Electric Polyolbion SAT will be poet and broadcaster Paul Farley's reimagining of SAT Michael Drayton's sprawling, extraordinary Poly-Olbion, SAT first published in 1612. SAT SAT The term Poly-Olbion suggests 'many Albions', the plurality SAT of place, and Drayton described his own project as "...a SAT chorographicall [sic] description of tracts, rivers, SAT mountains, forests, and other parts of this renowned isle... SAT with intermixture of the most remarkable stories, SAT antiquities, wonders, rarities, pleasures and commodities of the same." SAT SAT Drayton's Poly-Olbion is a remarkable poem: 30,000 lines, SAT arranged in 30 sections or 'songs', describing the geography SAT and history of England and Wales county by county. SAT References to place are clear and precise. SAT SAT The Electric Poly-Olbion will follow and explore the same SAT topographies as Drayton's work, and Paul Farley will use its SAT precursor to create a new version out of our contemporary SAT landscape that incorporates and synthesizes historical, SAT scientific, political, literary, pop-cultural and SAT autobiographical dimensions into the imaginative region of SAT the long poem. SAT SAT As he travels the country Farley writes his own long form SAT verse in and around the places and references of Drayton's SAT original: the same landscapes, two wildly different time SAT frames. Paul has a lovely ease of style in conversation, and SAT he'll meet other local writers along the way. SUN SUN To take successful military action, you do not only need SUN soldiers, aircraft or warships. The support of the society SUN and political leadership is crucial in sustaining armed SUN action. Yet public involvement in current debates about the SUN future of the military has been very limited, as old ideas SUN of 'leaving it to the professionals' prevail. SUN SUN So what happens when society becomes divorced from the SUN business of defending itself? In liberal Britain, some SUN sections of society seem more and more alienated from SUN military action. Using force clashes with modern concerns SUN about human rights and risk-avoidance. New forms of media SUN have cut through the more sanitised portrayal of war in the SUN mainstream media, adding to public concern. And politicians, SUN scarred by the unpopularity of recent military actions, SUN noting the grief which every single casualty prompts, are SUN likely to be ever more wary of future warfare. SUN SUN Within the military too there is change, and friction. New SUN technology is taking armed action further away from old SUN ideas of heroism and codes of conduct. These days lawyers SUN sit in army headquarters challenging military decisions. SUN Many in the military appear frustrated by what they see a SUN lack of popular and political understanding of their role. SUN SUN In this programme Dr Kenneth Payne, military specialist at SUN King's College London, explores how deep these tensions run, SUN and what they mean for Britain's military future. In the very first programme of Saving Species we had TUE an exclusive report about Koalas. We heard that factors such TUE as change in habitat use and the felling of their trees were TUE forcing Koalas in many areas of Australia to spend more time TUE on the ground and in doing so the Koalas were being attacked TUE by dogs. We learnt that Koalas are in peril. We return to TUE Australia and join ABC reporter Kim Kleidon and Koala TUE Biologist Bill Ellis on St Bee's Island off the Queensland TUE coast. Bill Ellis leads a research group from the University TUE of Queensland on all aspects of Koala biology but is TUE particularly interested in recording their sounds to TUE decipher their interactions with each other. TUE TUE 11:30 Good Grief: The Story of Peanuts b00vrvdm (Listen) TUE Pete Paphides, writer and music critic, talks to family, TUE friends and fans of Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts TUE cartoon. He asks why he related so strongly to long TUE suffering Charlie Brown and why Peanuts was the most TUE successful newspaper comic strip of all time. TUE TUE The programme contains interviews with Schulz's widow, Jean TUE Schulz, two of his children- Craig and Jill, as well as TUE contributions from graphic designer Chip Kidd, comic book TUE artist Chris Ware and life-long fan Russell T. Davies. TUE TUE 10 years on from Schulz's death and 60 years on from the TUE creation of Peanuts in 1950, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, TUE Linus, Shroeder et al still hold a huge place in people's TUE lives and memories. The Peanuts comic strip was the most TUE popular cartoon strip of all time and crossed boundaries of TUE young and old- some claim it did for comic strips what the TUE Beatles did for music. Others called it 'a beat strip', TUE perfectly reflecting American society. But its appeal was global. TUE TUE Using the most minimum of lines, Schulz was able to convey TUE emotions and humour. His characters were contemplative, TUE philosophical, isolated, sometimes depressed. And TUE surprisingly they made clever observations about classical TUE music, theology psychiatry and sport. Classic story-lines TUE included the Great Pumpkin, Lucy vying for attention at TUE Shroeder's piano, Linus' blanket, Snoopy versus the Red TUE Baron, and Charlie Brown never kicking the football. TUE TUE Charlie Brown, the central character was isolated and TUE lonely. A real person, with real problems was a new idea in TUE comics and he spoke to people all over the world- including TUE the presenter of this programme, Pete Paphides, growing up TUE in Birmingham. For the men involved this was an often WED dangerous but exciting time which many describe as the best WED of their sea-faring lives. Yet their stories have gone WED untold, until now. WED WED Peter Flack was on the Agapenor, a ship heading for home WED with a cargo of plastic toys for Woolworths. It had been an WED ordinary sailing until the morning of June the 5th 1967. WED Peter was on deck when suddenly he saw Israeli jets WED streaking out of the rising sun towards Egypt. John Hughes WED was an electrician on another ship, The Melampus. He was at WED the top of a mast, fixing a light, when -glancing down- he WED saw Egyptian soldiers dug-in along the banks of the canal WED pointing their guns directly at him. Shortly after his WED speedy descent from the mast, the Israeli air-raid began. As WED his colleague, Graham McMorine, remembers the jets used the WED ships as cover, crossing the canal at mast height to bomb WED the Egyptian air-base. WED WED As the war continued, Egypt decided to close the Suez Canal. WED It remained closed even after the war ended, trapping the WED ships and their crew. After a while the men were allowed WED home and relief crews arrived. As the long war of attrition WED rumbled on, the sailors caught in the middle began to swap WED cargo and have parties. There were onboard football WED tournaments, archery, sprinting and water-skiing. Ships from WED east and west took part, despite the ongoing Cold War.
