The impact of the foreign media on the SAT course of the Arab revolutions. And exploring the SAT imaginative world of a robot-loving, Chinese inventor. SAT SAT Nowhere in the world is better prepared for earthquakes than SAT Japan. But no amount of careful planning could have really SAT readied the nation for what it has just endured. This was a SAT disaster on a truly vast scale. It will be days yet before SAT we fully understand the extent of its impact in Japan and SAT beyond.... Fear of exactly this kind of event continually SAT haunts the Japanese in their chronically quake-prone SAT land...and Hugh Levinson explains how very deeply this dread SAT of impending catastrophe has embedded itself in the national SAT culture.... SAT SAT These are extremely dangerous days for the West African SAT state of Ivory Coast. There's a fear that the nation will SAT descend into all-out civil war. The political system has SAT completely seized up. The outside world believes that SAT November's presidential elections were won by Alassane SAT Ouatara. But the sitting leader, Laurent Gbagbo is refusing SAT to hand over power... And Andrew Harding has been finding SAT out what that means on the streets of Abidjan... SAT SAT All revolutions are different. Each has it's own character. SAT But a large part of their success or failure often hinges on SAT whether the army stays loyal to the regime. And in Libya SAT much of the military has indeed stood by Colonel Gaddafi. SAT There's a growing sense that he's there to stay. Right up on SAT the front lines, John Simpson has been watching this drama SAT play out....and he reflects now on some of the defining SAT rhythms of revolutions.... SAT SAT In the far north-east of India, lies the state of Manipur. SAT It's land of rolling hills...lush and well-watered. But it's SAT also been a troubled place. Along with much of the SAT north-east there have been inter-ethnic tensions, and SAT Manipur has endured a very long-running insurgency. My SAT colleague Rupa Jha has been spending time with some of its SAT victims.... SAT SAT It's hard to define what makes for a creative, inventive SAT spirit....that ability suddenly to see a solution....a SAT different way of doing things. The inventor of the light SAT bulb, Thomas Edison certainly had it. He famously said that SAT genius was one percent inspiration, and ninety-nine percent SAT perspiration. But it's also easy to believe that creativity SAT requires a certain amount of freedom....room to experiment, SAT question and think differently. And Martin Patience has been SAT wondering whether authoritarian China creates the right SAT climate for its inventive dreamers.... Throughout the story, the gun changes the lives of SAT those who fight each other to the death in order to gain SAT control of it. SAT SAT This week, Stephanie's top executive guests hail from the SAT worlds of mobile energy, sanitary fittings and business SAT services. They discuss how businesses cope in a "slow SAT growth" environment. Could years of slow growth be more SAT challenging than a short sharp shock? SAT SAT And not so long ago, the slow coach economy in Europe was SAT Germany - now it's steaming ahead of everyone. What's gone SAT right for Germany - and what lessons could other countries SAT learn? SAT SAT Stephanie is joined in the studio by Rupert Soames, chief SAT executive of mobile energy group, Aggreko; Neal Gandhi, SAT chief executive of international business services company SAT Quickstart Global; David Haines, chief executive of German SAT bathroom fittings company Grohe. SAT SAT 19:00 Profile b00zd70q (Listen) SAT Foreign Secretary, William Hague SAT SAT He's a popular figure in the Conservative Party and a key SAT player in the Coalition, but this week the Foreign SAT Secretary, William Hague, was criticised after a bungled SAS SAT mission into Libya. The Prime Minister has defended him, but SAT others are asking whether Hague still has a passion for SAT politics at the highest level. SAT SAT As Tory leader in 2001, he led his party to a crushing SAT defeat and announced his resignation the day after the SAT election. Over the next few years, he enjoyed a rise in SAT popularity, probably helped by appearances on the TV show, SAT 'Have I Got News for You'. Now, back at the top of the SAT political game, he's again facing challenges which are SAT testing his mettle. SAT SAT 19:15 Saturday Review b00zd70s (Listen) SAT A review of the week's cultural highlights. SAT SAT 20:00 Archive on 4 b00zd70v (Listen) SAT Divorce - British Style SAT SAT 40 years ago, a legal change ushered in one of the most SAT profound and rapid changes in British society. The Divorce SAT Act of 1969 came into force in 1971, introducing the concept SAT of no-fault divorces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. SAT Scotland followed with its own reform not long after. The SAT results were dramatic. The rate of divorce - which had been SAT around 30,000 a year in the 1960s, rocketed in the first SAT year of the new act to over 110,000. It continued to rise, SAT hitting a high of over 160,000 couples in the mid-80s, SAT before dropping back down as more couples cohabit rather SAT than marry. Still, four out of ten marriages are estimated SAT to end in divorce, and the UK has one of the highest divorce SAT rates in Europe. SAT Rosie Boycott, herself a veteran of the feminist battles of SAT the 1960s, revisits the personal stories and surprising SAT debates of the 1950s, 60s and 70s documenting and reflecting SAT on the profound social change unleashed by the new divorce SAT legislation. SAT Producer: Daniel Tetlow. SAT SAT 21:00 Classic Serial b00z52d6 (Listen) SAT Anna of the Five Towns, Episode 1 SAT SAT Arnold Bennett's powerful story of love, tyranny and SAT rebellion set against the vitality and harshness of life in SAT the Staffordshire Potteries in the late nineteenth century, SAT dramatised by Helen Edmundson. SAT SAT 22:15 Moral Maze b00z5hrj (Listen) SAT What - if anything - should Britain do about Libya? Do we SAT have a moral duty to intervene on the side of the rebels, SAT and - if so - how far should we be prepared to go to help SAT them? One rebel spokesman this week asked Britain to SAT intervene immediately with air strikes against Gadaffi's SAT forces. Should we wait for a UN resolution (which might well SAT be vetoed by Russia or China) or should we act now to save SAT civilian lives? There are many practical considerations SAT involving international and domestic politics, military SAT capabilities and economics; but before we start arguing SAT about what might be achievable or prudent, we must decide SAT what is right. SAT SAT If military intervention is ruled out, what about supplying SAT arms to the rebels? If not weapons, what about food, SAT shelter, medicine and other humanitarian assistance? And if SAT we send in doctors, should there be troops to protect them? SAT What about indirect pressure on the regime through SAT financial, trade and diplomatic sanctions? And what if SAT Gadaffi remains in power despite them? Or should Britons now SAT accept that we have neither the power nor the moral SAT authority to interfere in the internal affairs of other SAT countries? Politicians are driven by the idea of progress SAT and things getting better but it can be a dangerous SAT imperative when trying to overthrow dictators. If we support SAT the Arab populism in the name of freedom are we merely SAT clearing the stage for the next anti-western tyranny that SAT waits in the wings? SAT SAT Combative, provocative and engaging debate chaired by SAT Michael Buerk with Matthew Taylor, Claire Fox, Clifford SAT Longley and Anne McElvoy. SAT SAT 23:00 The 3rd Degree b00z58bg (Listen) SAT Stirling SAT SAT Coming this week from the University of Stirling, host Steve SAT Punt puts questions to students and lecturers of Psychology, SAT Marketing, and English Studies. So if you've got a notion as SAT to who lived at 7 Eccles Street, what is James Bond's family SAT motto, or why on earth a marketer might use a 'semantic SAT cognitive differential tangent' then listen in... SAT SAT "The 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic new quiz SAT show aimed at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 SAT listeners whilst delighting the current ones. It's recorded SAT on location at a different University each week, and it pits SAT three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a SAT genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being SAT a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent SAT standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and SAT jokes thrown in for good measure. SAT SAT Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes SAT posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union SAT buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities SAT across the UK. SAT SAT The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General SAT Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the SAT 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not SAT only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, SAT languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness SAT of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the SAT Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their SAT Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, SAT and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both SAT sides... SAT SAT The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit SAT surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly SAT rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more SAT than just glanced at that reading list... SAT SAT Producer: David Tyler SAT A Pozzitive production for BBC Radio 4. SUN SUN 11:15 The Reunion b00zd8fy (Listen) SUN Comic Relief SUN SUN In this episode of The Reunion, Sue MacGregor gathers SUN together the founding members of Comic Relief. SUN SUN The idea first emerged in 1984 when a devastating famine was SUN crippling Ethiopia. Inspired by the work of Live Aid, a SUN group of people led by writer Richard Curtis decided to tap SUN into the great British comedy scene and raise money for SUN Africa. All costs would be covered by sponsors. This would SUN enable the 'Golden Pound' principal - that every penny SUN raised should go to charity. SUN SUN Comic Relief was launched live on Noel Edmonds' Late, Late SUN Breakfast Show on Christmas Day 1985 from a refugee camp in SUN Sudan. Helen Fielding was the Comic Relief documentary maker SUN leading the project in Africa at the time. The launch raised SUN £1 million. A few months later Comic Relief staged their SUN first live fundraising show at London's Shaftesbury Theatre SUN with performances by Rowan Atkinson, Ronnie Corbett and Kate SUN Bush. That year, they released their first number one hit SUN single with The Young Ones and Cliff Richard. SUN SUN Comic Relief needed a symbol - something which could be sold SUN in exchange for a donation and which would give the public a SUN way of joining in. On the back of the Red Nose idea came the SUN first ever Red Nose Day TV extravaganza in 1988 - an event SUN which would bring together comedy and charity like never SUN before on live national TV. Richard Curtis recalls 'chaos, SUN panic and tears' behind the scenes. The show raised a SUN staggering £15 million and would go on to become an SUN institution. SUN SUN Sue is joined around the table by; Richard Curtis co-founder SUN of Comic Relief; Lenny Henry and Griff Rhys Jones who SUN presented the early TV shows; Helen Fielding who was the SUN first Africa documentary producer and Paddy Coulter, who was SUN Head of Media at Oxfam and an early Comic Relief board SUN member. The Bomb, the Chancellor and Britain's Nuclear Secrets MON MON In the first edition of a new series, Mike investigates MON documents which suggest that Labour Chancellor Denis Healey MON was kept in the dark over plans to modernise Polaris, MON Britain's nuclear weapons system in the mid-1970s. MON MON Dubbed Chevaline, the upgrade programme was top secret and MON highly controversial, that would eventually cost hundreds of MON millions of pounds more than originally estimated. And all MON this at a time of economic hardship. Striving to keep his MON split party together on the highly sensitive issue of MON nuclear weapons, Prime Minister Harold Wilson restricted MON decision-making to a small circle of ministers. MON MON But Thomson discovers papers which suggest that officials MON may have gone to extreme lengths to ensure that Chevaline MON was kept on track, proposing to withold key information from MON a sceptical Chancellor on the "need to know" basis. Was MON national security the real reason or were other motives at MON play? MON MON Mike puts the claims to former Cabinet Ministers Tony Benn MON and Lord Owen, formerly David Owen, Foreign Secretary in the MON late 70s. MON MON Producer: Laurence Grissell MON MON 20:30 Analysis b00zdj03 (Listen) MON The prime minister has proposed a new 'muscular liberalism', MON aimed at better integrating Britain's Muslims. MON MON Daffodils MON MON Scientists from Oxford University claim to have defined MON exactly what the trumpet of a daffodil is. Flowers are MON usually built from the same basic four parts: sepals, MON petals, stamens and carpels, but daffodils also have a fifth MON part, known as the trumpet, or corona. After dissecting MON thousands of bulbs Dr. Robert Scotland and his team have MON suggested that the trumpet is a new organ. Robert joins Adam MON to explain more. MON MON James Watt exhibition MON MON Adam visits the Science Museum in London, where curators are MON preparing for a new exhibition which allows visitors to step MON inside the extraordinary workshop of inventor and engineer MON James Watt. TUE TUE He wrote a contentious paper comparing a made-up condition TUE 'equasy' (an addiction to horse-riding) with the dangers of TUE ecstasy. He recalls a phone-call from the then Home TUE Secretary, Jacqui Smith, who was infuriated by what he had TUE written. She felt he was belittling the dangers of a Class A TUE drug, and attempting to meddle in Government policy. TUE TUE Unbowed, he then gave a lecture where he re-stated his TUE views. By this time Alan Johnson was Home Secretary and TUE Professor David Nutt - in what he describes as an TUE 'e-dismissal' - was sacked from his advisory role. TUE TUE Professor Nutt describes the events leading up to his TUE dismissal, and discusses the impact on him personally when TUE The Sun ran a piece illustrated by photos of his children, TUE one of them apparently drunk (she wasn't) the other smoking TUE a roll-up (of tobacco). TUE TUE 11:30 The Way Out: The Disabled Avant-Garde b00zdl1w (Listen) TUE Can art and irony achieve what mainstream politics never has TUE and give the disability movement its own revolution? TUE TUE Disability has never had its revolutionary moment: no TUE Suffrage, Stonewall or Watts Riots. Rather it's been TUE perceived as the poor relation of civil rights, last on the TUE agitation pecking order. Performance artist Aaron Williamson TUE (who is profoundly deaf) presents a feature exploring TUE whether performing arts practice can do what political TUE agitation never has - radicalize, even revolutionise, TUE mainstream public perceptions of disability. Williamson's TUE collective, the (probably ironically named) 'Disabled TUE Avant-Garde' has performed cabaret, stand-up, played live, TUE staged political pranks, and even made short films depicting TUE a world in which a violent, insurrectionary gang of TUE 'disability terrorists' has brought the government to its TUE knees à la Baader Meinhof/ Angry Brigade - a sort of TUE missing film about an absent revolution. TUE TUE These artists, as well as affiliate organizations like 15mm TUE Films, set out to challenge popular perceptions of disabled TUE people as well as explore disabled artists' own physical TUE differences from the norm. TUE TUE This feature will look at their work in contrast to TUE mainstream public thinking on disability (eg.the Equality TUE and Human Rights Commission) and ask whether the radical TUE possibilities opened up by disability politics have been TUE co-opted by endless subsidy and 'minority' box ticking. It TUE will also explore whether this is the one remaining area of TUE identity politics where art still has the edge. Featuring TUE interview, audio and sound art from the 'Disabled TUE Avant-Garde'. TUE TUE Presenter: Aaron Williamson TUE Producer: Simon Hollis TUE A Brook Lapping production for BBC Radio 4. TUE TUE 12:00 You and Yours b00zdl1y (Listen) TUE Is teaching harder than it looks? Should we give teachers TUE more respect for doing a difficult job? The main theme for this year's talks WED will explore conflict in different forms and how it WED interacts with various aspects of society and culture. WED WED 21:00 Costing the Earth b00zf34j (Listen) WED Carbon Trading WED WED It sounded like the perfect answer. Carbon trading could WED halt global warming, boost 'green' investment in the WED developing world and make money for city traders. Four years WED on and Europe's complex system to cut emissions from our WED factories has comprehensively failed. Despite vast amounts WED of money and effort being thrown at the scheme the current WED phase of carbon trading has, according to one report, cut WED emissions by a third of one per cent. In 'Costing the Earth' WED Tom Heap asks if capitalism's big idea has a future or just WED a murky past. WED WED Back in the 1990s, in a desperate attempt to get the United WED States to sign up to binding reductions in the emission of WED greenhouse gases the concept of carbon trading was WED developed. The idea was that polluting industries would be WED forced to buy the right to pollute in the form of carbon WED credits. If they wanted to pollute more they'd have to pay. WED If they polluted less then they could make a profit by WED offering their surplus credits to other businesses. Over WED time the number of credits would be reduced, bringing WED worldwide carbon emissions tumbling in a relatively WED pain-free way. WED WED The truth, as Tom discovers, is very different. The US has WED refused to take part, Japan and Korea have shelved plans to WED join in and the issue splits the Australian government. Only WED in the European Union has a system been developed and even WED here corruption, theft and a vast surplus of credits have WED combined to damage the policy's reputation and blunt its WED effectiveness. WED WED Despite doubts about the system it's influence is spreading WED fast. Many businesses are using a system of voluntary carbon WED off-setting to ease the conscience of their customers. Buy a WED flight or a 4 x 4 and you'll often be asked to pay a little WED extra to fund carbon-reduction schemes in the developing WED world. Closer to home the idea of habitat banking is gaining WED ground. This could give developers the chance to build on a WED wildlife-rich area as long as they pay to create the WED equivalent habitat elsewhere. It's a concept that's popular WED within the coalition government and supporters expect it to WED become a major part of conservation policy in England within WED the decade. WED WED Should we worry about this commodification of our WED environment or embrace the arrival of money and markets into WED the campaign to save our planet and improve the green space WED on our doorstep? THU THU 11:30 Nazi Gold: Publishing the Third Reich b00zf4hz (Listen) THU Why are books about the Third Reich such an ongoing THU publishing phenomenon in the UK....and what does it say THU about us? THU THU According to trade magazine The Bookseller, there were no THU less than 850 new titles about the Third Reich published in THU the UK in 2010 (up from 380 in 2000 -.that's more than THU double in ten years). These join the thousands already THU available on Amazon covering everything from Hitler and the THU occult to SS uniforms and the teaspoons of the Third Reich; THU from Nazi bunkers and secret weapons to the regime's THU interest in flying saucers, the lives of the Fuhrer's THU personal pilots and (our favourite) 'How Astrology Guided THU Hitler's Germany'. THU THU And there's no sign the market has become saturated, far THU from it: Hitler and his regime are known in the British THU publishing business as 'The gift that keeps on giving'. THU Interestingly, book sales in the UK on subjects relating to THU Nazism are not matched, in relative terms, by any other THU country in the world. So really: what does all this say THU about us, the reading public? This feature - with shades of THU light and dark - examines an ongoing, national publishing THU phenomenon, talking to authors and agents, historians, Nazi THU thriller writers and publishers among others. THU THU Guests also include the comedian David Mitchell, Laurence THU Rees, Guy Walters and Henry Stevens, author of 'Hitler's THU Flying Saucers'. As THU Lionel stumbles from bad date with Emma to bad first day at THU a call centre, he struggles with an inner voice telling him THU he's boring and useless - "or just plain weird". At a weekly support group his THU fellow sufferers Simon, Max and Rosie uncover his ambition THU to be a comic and encourage him to take it further by THU setting a challenge: to perform in a comedy club. As the THU night approaches, the idea seems ludicrous. How can a man THU who can't bring himself to meet his girlfriend's parents THU stand up and perform in front of a raucous pub crowd? From the anthropological THU hoax of Piltdown man back in 1912, through to more recent THU cases, such as that of Dr Hwang Woo-suk, the Korean THU scientist accused of faking his "breakthrough" into stem THU cell research, there have been some dramatic and spectacular THU examples of scientists, who, for whatever reason, have THU chosen to be less than honest with their research and data. THU THU In the first of this two part series, Dr Adam Rutherford THU investigates how common cases of scientific misconduct are, THU and the motivation for the scientists who stand accused. How THU damaging are cases like these, not only to their respective THU fields, but to the public perception of a pursuit whose THU central premise, many would claim, is a quest for universal THU truth, whatever that truth might be. THU THU Adam Rutherford looks at some of the science scandals that THU have been hitting the headlines over the last few years, and THU assesses the impact they've had. He asks if deceit and THU misconduct are more common than we think, or whether, like THU any enterprise that involves humans, it's simply the work of THU a few rotten apples.
